Biologics can make it more difficult to fight off infection. If you are sick, have a fever, infection, or are currently taking antibiotics, we should reschedule your appointment for a time when you are feeling better.
Certain biologics require you to take medications at home before your infusion therapy to help prevent side effects. Please remember to take these on time and as prescribed.
We recommend drinking plenty of water the day before and the day of your infusion. Hydration makes it easier for the nurses to access your veins with an IV catheter. If possible, you should avoid caffeine before your appointment.
We ask patients to please arrive on time for their infusion appointment. If you are running late, please call us to see if we can accommodate your delay. In some cases, we are unable to accommodate a delay and will need to reschedule your appointment.
Paid, underground parking is available at our clinic. Please note the machine accepts credit cards only. The parkade is accessible from the back alley off Laurel Street. There are other paid lots nearby, which includes Shoppers Drug Mart located next door. There is also metered parking on the streets nearby.
The elevator is accessible through the underground parkade or from BIOPRO Biologics Pharmacy located at 845 W Broadway. You can also access the clinic at street level at 839 W Broadway and take the stairs to the second floor.
Please dress in layers, as sometimes people get chilled during their infusion. Loose-fitting and comfortable clothing are best.
Bring things to keep you occupied, such as a book, magazine, a portable electronic device. Please bring headphones to use with your device not to disturb others. We ask people not to make or take phone calls while they are in the infusion room.
Free Wi-Fi is available within the clinic.
You are welcome to bring food and drink to your appointment and are encouraged to do so if you are coming in for a longer infusion.
The length of your infusion depends on the medication. Infusion lengths vary from 15 minutes to 4 hours. Ask your nurse how long your specific infusion time will be.
You may feel tired after your infusion. Each drug has its own set of side effects, which you should discuss with your doctor beforehand. If you have any symptoms you are concerned about, please do speak to your rheumatologist.
Most people feel fine after their infusion; however, some people feel tired, especially if they have taken pre-medications that cause drowsiness. You may want to plan a ride home for your first appointment until you know how you will feel.
